Universal accessibility
In order to ensure that users of all abilities can enjoy Manistee County’s water resources, the Explore the Shores program facilitated the design and construction of five site-specific recreational facilities including this one at Arthur Street, where there was an existing boat launch.
The Arthur Street Boat Launch project received project funding from the Great Lakes Fishery Trust to construct a low-maintenance fishing pier made with composite decking. This money was leveraged in a successful application for further funds from a DNR Waterways Grant, which enabled the development of handicapped parking, a barrier free restroom, and barrier-free upgrades to the parking lot and boat launch. Substantial retaining walls were designed so as not to impact flood plains. The complexity of the walls constituted 25% of project costs; however, the benefit of not impacting the floodplain outweighed the cost of mitigation.
